Since last year we have been watching the news together.I enjoy this time because I know my children are being exposed to real news, in real time and also are able to follow the stories as they develop into real and complicated cases sometimes for several days. This makes the story more interesting to follow.
Because my kids are older enough to understand the context like conflict in other countries, election fraud, riots, consequences to crimes, dishonesty, government issues, global economy and more. They can give their personal opinion and voice in a wide variety of topics.
I like discussing some of these topics with them as well as listening to their different opinions. What I enjoy the most is the assurance of knowing my children are filtering what they hear with the word of God.
We also have discussed the dangers with drugs and bad relationships. Profound emotions arise when we hear about some of the behaviours and actions from people in different countries and how this has affected the entire society.
My children have a strong Godly foundation which help them to have healthy choices when socializing with friends as well as strong and firm moral values for not to fall into the dangers of drugs or innapropiate actions that may hurt themselves or others.
I am thankful we can educate our children at home especially with all these violent acts happening in schools. My children also feel safe at home while they can still know what is happening around the world without exaclty being in the middle of the chaos.
So much real learning happening every day around here. Some from good books and others from real experiences whether self experience or by watching the news.

Old ways or new ways?
One of the very popular topics now a days is the conflict between technology and traditional ways of learning. What do I mean by traditional ways of learning vs technology?
One of my favourite things to do is visiting museums. The excitement I found in witnessing a master piece makes me feel part of the history because I am standing looking at something that one day, in a different time, was the object in one artist's mind.
Playing a good game of chess with my family in the comfort of our living room is such enjoyable as watching my husband and my son playing against each other on a videogame and thinking to myself "boys will always be boys".
What about textbooks vs on-line courses? We use both. We can be equally benefit from a good textbook like Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology from Apologia Science http://www.apologia.com/ and still enjoy an interesting, interactive and sometimes free on-line course from LearnNow BC http://www.learnnowbc.ca/.
So, I believe learning through the use of technology is as important as using the traditional ways and again both are enjoyable and invaluable methods we must appreciate and teach our children to use wisely.
Captivating and entrancing, a good book is always welcome in my hands.I enjoy leafing through its pages and even the peculiar smell of each page as I read. I don't like reading a book on-line even if I could use the best and latest e-reader on earth. On the other hand, I take pleasure on reading a good on-line article or being blesssed by a well written blog.
I like going to the scrapbooking store to buy beautiful embelishments and originally designed paper which combined with my memorable pictures bring so much joy to me.At the same time,
the amazing and always available on-line scrapbooking keeps me working and building different designs for hours.
However, technology gives me the opportunity to travel in a matter of seconds to any place on earth to see famous masterpieces without even having to leave the comfort of my house. Especially when we are learning about a different culture or time in history.
Having a variety of dictionaries and thesaurus handy is quiet helpful still, using my laptop to find the meaning, pronunciation and spelling of a word at the same time is priceless.

I also delight on watching a good webinar in my computer while keeping my pj's on and enjoying a hot cup of tea in the comfort of my home. I learn so much from both different yet fulfilling ways of learning that I constantly seek for more from both experiences.
So, I believe learning through the use of technology is as important as using the traditional ways and again both are enjoyable and invaluable methods we must appreciate and teach our children to use wisely.
Dynamic and uncertain, our world is changing constantly.Technology is leading the path in many ways. We can't rely on it all the time but we also can't deny our children the chance to learn how to use it.
We have the responsibility as parents to expose our children to good resources as well as to teach them how to be a resourceful person in this constantly changing world without forgetting the old ways that will always be rememberable and significant for people like me.

We are ready!
Summer is almost over and I am planning already for what we will be learning this year.
New topics, new programs, new season for everybody, I am excited!
Every year I try to have programs and resources with a Biblical world view. My main goal has always been to equip my children in God's word going beyond the basics. Especially in these difficult times where the world wants to influence this generation in such a way that they forget about God.
I found many excellent resources that I am happy to share with you today.Answers in Genesis and Apologia are powerful resources I really enjoy.
This is our program for this year although some minimum areas are still under construction:
Esteban Grade 11:
Extra Activities: Swimming and Video Game Design.
Second Language: Latin http://www.visuallatin.com/
Fernanda Grade 9:
Books to Read: The ScrewTape Letters by C.S Lewis http://www.cslewis.com/bookdetail.aspx?ISBN13=9780060652890 and other titles she hasn't chosen yet.
Second Language:Latin http://www.visuallatin.com/
Andrea Grade 7:
Books to Read : (Still working on it)
Extra Activities:Soccer and maybe Theatre or Dance.
We will be making adjustments and improvements on the way but always will be enjoying learning and following God's guidance will be our fist priority.
